There is a new development opportunity available for a qualified Band 3 Health Care Assistant wishing to work in a new clinical field and gain new experiences, working as a Dialysis Health Care Assistant on the main dialysis unit based at Southmead Hospital. This is a Regional Renal Dialysis Unit managed by the Renal Unit, North Bristol NHS Trust. The Dialysis Unit is an outpatient facility that provides haemodialysis care for patients whose kidneys have failed. Band 3 Health Care Assistants (HCA) in the dialysis unit provide direct care for patients when they come to the unit. Band 3 HCA responsibilities include:
• Support Registered nursing staff in the provision of basic nursing care to patients attending for haemodialysis treatment
•Line and prime dialysis machines in preparation for dialysis.
•Carryout routine preparation of patients for dialysis treatment.
•Assess patients before, during and after dialysis treatment to ensure their treatment is carried out safely and to the highest standard.
•Input dialysis prescription onto dialysis machine informing the nurse in charge of any potential variance. Discuss treatment options and act under the guidance of the registered nurse to carry these out.
•Be able to use vascular access under the supervision of the registered nurse whilst maintaining patient safety.
•Commence and discontinue dialysis under the supervision of the registered nurse.
•Report any changes in patient condition to the nurse in charge for assessment and review. •Monitor and document the patient’s observations throughout the treatment procedure.
•Help to promote and maintain a clean and comfortable environment on the unit which meets the needs of patients, their relatives/carers and friends.
•§Contribute towards a team approach to patient care, in conjunction with nursing colleagues, medical staff and professions allied to medicine. Helping to ensure that patient safety is at the heart of all we do.
