NORTH BRISTOL NHS TRUST CONSULTANT IN OBSTETRICS WITH AN INTEREST IN PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH AND POSTNATAL CARE

Bristol has again been named as the UK’s most desirable location in the Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide. Described as “a small city that feels like a big city” it was praised for being “handily placed for seaside and scenery” but “hardly cut off” “cool, classy and supremely creative”

We are delighted to invite applications for a substantive consultant in obstetrics with an interest in perinatal mental health and postnatal care.

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest Trusts in the country. The Trust provides medical, surgical, neonatal and maternity care for its local population of approximately a million people in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. The Trust also provides regional services in neurosciences, orthopaedics, pathology, plastic surgery and burns, renal medicine and transplant and urology and is the major trauma centre for the West Country.

The successful candidate will join the dynamic team of 15 Consultants in Women’s Health at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust. We are one of the largest maternity units in the Southwest and deliver over 6,000 babies a year. We have specialist obstetric services in maternal medicine, perinatal mental health and an expanding service in abnormally invasive placenta. We work closely with our midwifery units – an alongside unit based in Southmead and the freestanding birthsuite at Cosham.

Our maternal mental health ante-natal clinic has been running now for 2 years and in the last 1 year we have had the additional expertise of the regional specialist community perinatal mental health service (SCPMHS). Our local team is comprised of a consultant obstetrician, a mental health nurse, a part-time midwife and a part-time administrator. We also liaise closely with our safeguarding team as our caseload often includes some of the most vulnerable women.

The maternal mental health ANC runs weekly and a triage of referrals meeting takes place before the clinic involving members of the local team along with members of the SCPMHS  including one of the perinatal psychiatrists. There are monthly governance meetings at Callington Rd Hospital which include the team from St Michaels Hospital in order to ensure a consistent cross-city approach.

The Women and Children’s services are delivered in close adjacency to the new Brunel Building which was opened in 2014. This allows excellent proximity to the teams required for complex maternity care. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register and have CCT in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full registration with the GMC is essential.

The post is based at Southmead Hospital. The appointee will be required to reside not more than 30 minutes travel by road from base hospital, for on-call purposes. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. The successful candidates will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.

If you are shortlisted we will contact you via email with details of your interview of which you will need to confirm your attendance. Therefore it is important that you check your online account regularly.
