Lead Medical Examiner

An opportunity has arisen for a Lead Medical Examiner to drive implementation and management of a joint Medical Examiners Service for North Bristol NHS Trust, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, and Weston Area Health Trust.

As Lead Medical Examiner, you will play a key role in establishing and maintaining a high-quality Medical Examiner Service. You will be the professional lead and provide both strategic planning and operational management to enable the service to operate effectively and efficiently.

The Medical Examiner role was created by the Department of Health and Social Care in response to observations made in the Third Report of the Shipman Inquiry. Our Trusts are working in partnership to implement a joint Medical Examiner service which will promote robust, transparent, and independent scrutiny of the death certification process.

As a Lead Medical Examiner, you will verify clinical information on Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCD) and ensure correct referrals to the coroner for further investigation. You will take a consistent approach to the formulation of MCCD content, which must be clinically accurate and reflect discussions with the next of kin / informant. You will work closely with the Lead Medical Examiner Officer and participate in a Medical Examiner Service rota.

Applicants should be flexible in approach to support the service, and possess strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to communicate in difficult and emotional situations with empathy and professionalism.

The Lead Medical Examiner is responsible for assuring the quality of the Medical Examiners work and will be the main source of advice and guidance on the service for key partners.

The post will attract 4PA remuneration which will be reflected in the successful candidate’s job plan. This should not take the candidate over 12 PA in total.

Further details of the post can be found at https://www.rcpath.org/profession/medical-examiners/become-a-medical-examiner.html

Due to the requirements of the role, this opportunity is open to Trust employed doctors based in BNSSG. Applicants must be a consultant registered and licenced to practise in the UK by the GMC, who have been on the general medical council register for a minimum of five years post registration.
