Applications are invited for a Full Time Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse on Gate 8a at Southmead Hospital. We are a 33 bedded medical ward specialising in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Haematology.

We are a friendly, motivated, dynamic team who aim to provide high standards of care to a variety of patient groups with complex medical needs. Our patients mainly present with acute and chronic liver failure, inflammatory bowel disease and haematological cancers. Proven experience of managing acutely unwell patients is essential along with the ability to recognise and react to deteriorating patients.

We work closely with the Alcohol Liaison team so experience of managing patients in acute detox using CIWA would be advantageous although training can be provided. Additionally, we often manage patients with complex eating disorders therefore an interest and understanding of this patient group would also be beneficial but not essential.

To provide optimal holistic care to our patients we work across a wide multidisciplinary team. Our team consists of Gastroenterologists and Haematologists, Dieticians, mental health colleagues, clinical psychology and wo work in close conjunction with the STEPS unit at Blackberry Hill. We also work closely with the Endoscopy department, Interventional Radiology and the Palliative Care team. Opportunities can be given to spend time with these specialities as part of the initial induction process.

Gate 8a is a fast-paced busy area where patients can become unwell very quickly, we therefore require someone with the experience to manage complex rapidly changing situations whilst providing support to junior colleagues. You will need to be forward thinking, adaptable to change, proactive and enthusiastic. We are a welcoming team who will offer you much support and team work is central to caring for our patients safely. Clinically, we ask that you will have a variety of extended skills including central line and PICC line experience, TPN management and NG insertion.

You will need experience in ward coordination, complex discharge planning and managing patient flow. We have a large amounts of nursing students and health care assistants undergoing apprenticeships and care certificates as well as TNA training, you will be instrumental in supporting this learning by creating a safe and happy learning environment for these staff.

We will offer you a supernumery period during the beginning of your employment and this will be with support of the Ward Manager and existing senior nursing team. We will also offer you the opportunity to shadow some of the multidisciplinary team to gain an understanding of their roles. The NBT leadership programme is also available to you which provides a range of management skills workshops and other development activities such as coaching and team building to ensure staff who lead and manage are skilled and confident.
