Bristol has again been named as the UK's most desirable location in the Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide.

Described as "a small city that feels like a big city", it was praised for being "handily placed for seaside and scenery" but "hardly cut off". “Cool, classy and supremely creative”

We are delighted to invite applications for  a substantive Consultant post in Emergency Medicine. In May 2014, the Emergency Department moved to a new state-of-the-art hospital at Southmead, Bristol.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic team of 16 Consultants, providing cutting edge emergency care to the population of North Bristol. The Emergency Department is the adult major trauma centre for the Severn Trauma Network. The existing Consultants provide a high level of shop floor cover, including late shifts and an overnight resident trauma team leader service. This further expansion of Consultant numbers will allow increased Consultant shop floor presence during hours of greatest need, further matching senior staffing to patient demand.

The excellent team of Consultants all have a passion for delivering high quality emergency care. The skills of many of the existing consultants extend beyond emergency medicine. Examples of additional skills include; prehospital emergency medicine, expedition medicine, national expertise on the management of chest pain and stroke. Southmead ED is a leading research centre, and the department recruits to many NIHR portfolio studies and has recently gained significant grant funding to lead a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

Successful applicants will need to demonstrate the ability to work in this busy emergency department and trauma centre, the largest in the South West. In addition, we are seeking to enhance the skill mix of our current Consultant workforce.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine, (FRCEM or equivalent) have CCT in Emergency Medicine, or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. The post is based at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.  The appointee will be required to reside not more than 30 minutes travel by road from Southmead Hospital, Bristol, for on-call purposes. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

Successful candidates will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. Further details available from any of the current Emergency Medicine Consultants Tel: 0117 414 4996
