The Department of Cellular Pathology is seeking to appoint a Consultant Biomedical Scientist on a fixed term contract until December 2019. This is a rare opportunity to join a committed and expanding team of scientists and technologists with an innovative approach to service delivery.

With a scientific and technical staff of over 100, the Department of Cellular Pathology is housed in the state of the art Pathology Sciences development in North Bristol NHS Trust and is a key component of the Severn Pathology integrated pathology service.

Applications are invited from experienced, enthusiastic and well-motivated Individuals. All applicants should be in possession of the Advanced Specialist Diploma in Cervical Cytology and have developed specialist expertise in gynaecological cytology to a point of acting at an expert in this field.

The Cytopathology section (based at Southmead Hospital) reports over 78,000 gynae cytology requests and incorporates the Regional Cytology Training Centre.

The department has always worked closely with the NHSCSP in evaluating, piloting and new screening techniques and was one of three pilot sites in England for the evaluation of Liquid Based Cytology within the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. The approved HPV testing platforms were evaluated within the department and we were a pilot site for both HPV triage and HPV primary screening. This remains an exciting time for the department as in September 2017 we moved to 100% primary screening by HPV to support the Screening Programme’s mitigation initiative to reduce national backlogs.. We are currently looking to optimise our resources to be able to support the screening programme to the greatest possible extent during this transitional period and beyond. The new recruit to the service will therefore be working in an environment which will enable them to develop and learn from the huge wealth of knowledge and experience regarding HPV testing built up over the last eight years.
