Join a keen, friendly and experienced team in the expanding Cytology department at North Bristol NHS Trust in the vibrant city of Bristol.

Applications are invited from experienced, enthusiastic and well-motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists. All applicants should be in possession of the NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology and preferably be competent in screening Thin-prep samples. The successful candidate will have Specialist portfolio or equivalent and at least 2 years post registration experience in the specialism.

The Cytopathology section (based at Southmead Hospital) reports over 78,000 gynae cytology requests and incorporates the Regional Cytology Training Centre.

In 2016, the department moved in to a modern, purpose-built laboratory as part of an integrated pathology service for North Bristol.

The department has always worked closely with the NHSCSP in evaluating, piloting and new screening techniques and was one of three pilot sites in England for the evaluation of Liquid Based Cytology within the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. The approved HPV testing platforms were evaluated within the department and we were a pilot site for both HPV triage and HPV primary screening. This remains an exciting time for the department as in September 2017 we moved to 100% primary screening by HPV to support the Screening Programme’s mitigation initiative to reduce national backlogs.. We are currently looking to optimise our resources to be able to support the screening programme to the greatest possible extent during this transitional period. The new recruit to the service will therefore be working in an environment which will enable them to develop and learn from the huge wealth of knowledge and experience regarding HPV testing built up over the last eight years.

An expansive Non Gynae department processing 5000 samples a year covers a large portfolio of tests and techniques providing a reporting service with our specialist teams of Consultant Pathologists.
