Applications are invited for 2 senior/post CCT Critical Care Fellow posts (1 year) to rotate between the Royal Brompton Hospital, London and Southmead Hospital, Bristol. The Fellowships offer an excellent opportunity to develop skills tailored to the clinicians’ specific interests with full educational supervision to support this.  The post holders may have been trained in any specialty but must have previous experience of adult critical care and be at least at the level of intermediate level training as defined by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (UK), or equivalent training.

For the duration of the Royal Brompton component of the rotation the successful applicants will be based at in the Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU) which is an 18-bedded facility, with the ability to increase capacity to 22 beds when necessary, admitting approximately 1200 patients per year with a wide variety of cardiological and respiratory diseases.  The multidisciplinary AICU team cares for patients utilising a wide range of organ support therapies, including extracorporeal cardiovascular and respiratory support.  The AICU provides a severe acute respiratory failure referral service for the South-West of England and is commissioned as one of 5 national VV-ECMO centres. Additionally there is a developing VA-mechanical circulatory support service. The post holders will have the opportunity to participate in the provision of these services including patient retrieval and repatriation.

There is extensive use of echocardiography (TTE and TOE) along with FICE & CUSIC training in critical care areas and potential for the post holders to gain experience in this area, if desired.

The post holders will take part in the middle grade rota.  This is currently a one-in-eight full shift resident rota (band 1A) and is made up of 4 SpRs and several clinical and research fellows, and is subject to change dependent on staffing. They will be part of the critical care team, based primarily in AICU but also contributing to the ECMO retrieval & HDU team, when required.

At North Bristol NHS Trust, the 46 bed Intensive Care Unit is one of the busiest ICUs in the country, with a team of 24 consultants treating more than 2200 critically ill patients each year. It consistently delivers excellent SMR and trauma outcomes and is the regional specialist critical care centre for major trauma, neurosurgery, renal medicine, plastics and burns. These posts include funding for a day a week protected time for professional development.  Potential areas of interest could include major trauma, echocardiography, neuro critical care, simulation, leadership and management, or research. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated candidate to further develop their CV and join a team of dynamic clinicians delivering care in state of the art facilities.

The posts would suit clinicians who have recently acquired their CCT and wish to develop their CV or ST5+ trainees wanting an OOPTE in Intensive Care Medicine, (prospective approval would be required). There is a service commitment to a 1 in 8 on call rota working with the consultants in a senior clinical and leadership role.  Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. 

The posts offer excellent training and opportunities for career development but are not formally accredited for training purposes by the Royal College of Anaesthetists or the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
