Director of Corporate Governance and Trust Secretary - band 9, North Bristol NHS Trust, Salary up to £100,431 + excellent NHS benefits

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest NHS organisation in the South West with ambitious plans to provide outstanding care for the populations of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.  As a centre for specialist health services it is also a prestigious, internationally recognised teaching and research organisation providing care regionally and nationally.

With the appointment of a new Chair who is ambitious for our organisation and has a deep understanding of the role governance plays in driving excellence, we are now looking for an outstanding candidate to take the strategic lead on corporate governance and as the Trust Secretary to support the development of   the Board.

This is an exciting time to join NBT and the person appointed will join the senior leadership team and will work closely with the Chair and the Chief Executive, to provide strategic leadership and develop a high performing unitary Board with outstanding governance across the whole organisation.

NBT is a £565 million organisation with over 8,000 staff working in one of the most modern hospitals in the country. 

You will be based at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol, with a basic salary between £79,415 and £100,431 per annum (AFC band 9) + excellent NHS benefits.

The Role:

The role of Director of Corporate Governance and Trust Secretary is a key position within the senior leadership team.

As principal advisor to the Board and the organisation, you will be accountable for leading  the development and delivery of exceptional governance through policy, and best practice, which reflects the strategic intent and direction of the Trust, and which is in line with the standards of good governance set for the NHS and as recognised by ICSA.

As a member of the Trust’s Executive Team you will support the Chief Executive in fulfilling her Accountable Officer role and contribute to the formulation of strategy, policy and the delivery of statutory and corporate responsibilities.

Represent the Trust Board at the highest levels with external stakeholders, ensuring that the Trust’s best interests are championed and that Trust Executives and Non Executives are informed and engaged effectively in delivering the objectives of the Stakeholder Strategy.

The successful candidate will be able to evidence:

Qualification and membership of the appropriate professional body, such as Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) or the Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM)

 Considerable experience of dealing with senior external stakeholders and confidently representing a public sector or commercial body at Board level

A track record of leading on Corporate Governance and principles of business conduct in a large organisation.

A self-motivated, tenacious attitude with genuine interest and concern for quality and an understanding of the roles and relationships between Trust Chair, Chief Executive, Executives and Non-Executives.

Personal and professional credibility, maintaining confidence and establishing highly effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders including Board members, managers and clinical staff

An understanding of the broader strategic and policy context for delivery of health services and a thorough understanding of the statutory and regulatory framework for the NHS or equivalent regulated environment in another sector.
